Black rhinestone cane with Floral Designs

The correct cane size is the distance from the floor to the crease of your wrist while standing upright in your usual walking shoes—this typically gives a cane height that creates a 15–20° elbow bend for proper support.

The Wrist Crease Method (Most Accurate)

All major medical sources agree that this is the best way to size a cane:

1. Put on the shoes you normally walk in.

2. Stand upright with arms relaxed at your sides.

3. Have someone measure from the floor to the crease on the inside of your wrist.

4. That measurement is your ideal cane height.

5. This method reliably produces the recommended 15–20° elbow bend.

Why the Elbow Bend Matters

0. Too tall: shoulder hikes up, causing neck/shoulder pain.

1. Too short: you lean forward, stressing your lower back,

1. 5'4"–6'0": ~37 inches

2. Over 6'0": ~40 inches

More detailed ranges:

0. 5'0"–5'3": 30–32.5 in

1. 5'3"–5'6": 32.5–33.5 in

2. 5'6"–5'9": 33.5–34.5 in

3. 5'9"–6'0": 34.5–36 in

4. 6'0"–6'3": 36–39 in

Footwear Matters: Measure while wearing your usual walking shoes, because even a 1-inch difference in heel height can affect the correct cane length. https://scienceinsights.org/how-to-measure-for-a-walking-cane-find-the-right-fit/

How to Check the Fit Once You Have the Cane

0. Handle should line up with your wrist crease.

1. Elbow should bend slightly (15–20°).

2. You should not lift your shoulder or lean forward.

3. A properly sized cane improves balance, reduces joint load, and prevents posture problems over time.

A walking cane is a personal adornment, a fashion statement, and frequently a treasured memento in addition to being a mobility aid. Whether you use your cane every day or only on special occasions, keeping it aesthetically appealing and functional requires careful care.

Gently pat the cane dry as soon as you can after walking in damp weather. • Instead of keeping it in a damp hallway or garage, store it somewhere cool and dry.

Metal or aluminum canes: Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the rhinestones gently; be careful not to press hard and use only a mild soap if necessary.

Wooden canes: Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then pat dry immediately to prevent warping.

Examine and swap out rubber tips.

Grip and safety are guaranteed by the rubber tip (ferrule). It deteriorates with time, making your cane slick. Examine the tip every few weeks. • If you notice any cracks, flattening, or decreased traction, replace it right away.
